The start of a new year is a time for reflection, release and renewal. For many of us, this reflection includes looking back across the past year, creating a list of areas where we somehow fall short, and resolving to do better. Our resolutions are things about ourselves we would like to improve- to exercise more, to get more rest, to spend more time with family, etc. We want to change these things because of how we think we will feel once we’ve made the change.
We begin the year with conviction and determination and for so many of us, that initial zeal fizzles and we’re back to our old pattern. Why does this happen? We hope the change itself will create the feeling of accomplishment within ourselves. Many fail to realize we must feel positively about ourselves first before any positive change can occur.
Essential oils and aromatherapy can be useful tools in accessing our emotions and providing practical strategies to help us accomplish these positive changes. Olfactory receptors in our sense of smell are directly connected to the limbic part of our brain, the seat of our emotions. When we inhale tiny molecules of essential oil we are directly communicating with the feeling area of our brains. For example, Lavender essential oil is known to create a greater feeling of contentment and improving emotional state and mood. Inhalation of ylang ylang can help to create a balanced sense of personal value and self esteem. Frankincense helps with positive mood and with forming deeper spiritual connections.
A person who is nurtured though a pattern of emotional self-care is more likely to make mind/body connections that result in positive changes. We can make these changes because we love ourselves and our bodies and want the very best for them.
